Importance of Maintaining a Balance

Back to main page

Sex addicts are potentially both hypersexual and sexually anorexic. They are used to living in extremes with no sense of what is normal or of how to achieve a healthy balance.

Their idea of withdrawal and recovery is, therefore, distorted, and resembles a life of isolation, emptiness, boredom, rigidity, and deprivation. Most of sex addicts grew up with these feelings, and discovered that sex was elevating the emotional (at least temporarily).

In recovery, we learn the importance of maintaining balance in our lives.

We are spiritual, emotional/psychological, and physical beings.

We must devote time to all three aspects of ourselves in order to be balanced, whole, and fully functioning people.

As addicts, we tend to live in the extremes; we lack balance and our lives are unmanageable.

Each day we must eat some, sleep some, pray some, play some, work some, work our recovery program, and spend some time with friends and family (Outer Circle Behaviors, Healthy Rituals).

If we neglect any single aspect of our personhood for very long we upset the balance in our lives and jeopardize our sobriety.
